Fig. 7.2 Gas turbine combustion system At its most arduous operating point the combustion system may be functioning with an inlet air stream at a pressure of around 30 atmospheres and temperature of 800 K; peak flame temperatures may reach 2600 K. Given these conditions we may see that taking experimental measurements is extremely difficult. Combustor test rigs generally can operate only at compromised conditions, giving limited data at lower pressures (perhaps 10 atmospheres) or more detailed data at 1-5 atmospheres. In combustor development by experimental methods, we would use high-pressure rig testing (10 atm) which allows us to measure the exhaust gas temperatures and composition, along with measurements of the combustor wall temperatures. Full conditions can, of course, be achieved by running engine tests but even less information is available here, generally only metal temperatures, and this requires the existence of a suitable engine which will not be the case in the early stages of the design. Both rig and engine testing are also expensive and slow; if we wish to reduce development timescales and costs we must employ alternative tools to aid our design process.

Classic univariate regression uses a single predictor, which is usually insuf cient to model a property in complex samples. Multivariate regression takes into account several predictive variables simultaneously for increased accuracy. A national bank in the U.S. (I do not name it for anonymity) launched a Webbased Travel & Entertainment (T&E) application. Within a short time, the T&E application became a heavily used application, with more than 25,000 registered users. The front end was handled by two load-balanced Web servers that interacted with the back-end SAP system. Some users had problems logging out of the system and some with their Web browsers. Some problems were even trickier. One user created an expense report with 45 different line items. When he tried to save the report, the entire report disappeared. This went against all expectations, since the application was supposed to save the report after each line item. After several attempts at recreating the problem, the developers discovered that the user was putting a comma in the amount field for credit card expenses, which made the SAP buffer disappear, and the report was lost. Discovering such a problem could take months during formal tests but only days in real-life usage. Application testing to a large extent is done by users during regular use.
